page 57- "My husband, Francois loves to travel." Even though this line is short this made me think of Children of the River because like Firoozeh, Sundara falls in love with a boy from another culture.
Page 59- "To my family, a vacation usually meant going to a relative's house and sleeping on the floor, squeezed between several cousins." This just goes to show that fun and vacations are different for everyone and cultures.

A Dozen Key Chains
Page 42- "This reputation, carved in stone, is usually the result of a somewhat random act that for some unknown reason takes on a far greater meaning, and becomes the defining movement in a life." This works in American culture too because kids do things that live with them the rest of their lives and that they are known for in there family, even if they are embarrassing!!
Page 46- "There was one bathroom on the floor for all the girls o share. Oddly, the door to the bathroom had been removed, so any girl who needed to use the toilet or the sink would walk in on someone taking a shower." To Americans this situation would be no big deal but to other cultures were religion is so important this could become a serious problem.

Bernice
Page 38- "As Bernice waddled across the gym, I wanted to make her an offer. "How about I tell tell Lupe not to come next week, since you're going to be on vacation, and we just call it a day."" I thought this was interesting because people do sometimes automatically think that because you are foreign you work for Americans. I also thought it was funny that she actually said that because she was just saying how she felt!!
Page 40- "Have you noticed how all the recent cereal killers have been Americans? I won't hold it against you." I think that when she said this it showed just how other people feel when we look at on group of people all the same. She also made it a good point, most cereal killers are white and we don't walk around thinking every single white person is one, but we do that to other types of races.

With a Little Help from My Friends
page 31- "I was lucky to have come to America years before the political upheaval in Iran. The Americans we encountered were kind, and curious, unafraid to ask questions and willing to listen." I think this is very true because even now people from other countries, especially in the middle east are treated very differently and probably worse then they were in the 70's.
page 34- "But almost every person who asked us a question asked with kindness. Questions were often fallowed by suggestions of places to visit in California." For me this related to children of the river, because Saundra's family was also asked a lot of questions about there country and culture.

Swoosh-Swoosh
page 24- "Marriage, in my culture, has nothing to do with romance. It's a matter of logic. If Mr. and Mrs. Ahmadi like Mr. and Mrs. Nejati, then their children should get married." This reminded me of Children of the River, because in the Cambodian culture they also get arranged marriage, and the way they choose who their children in similar to how it is in Iranian culture.
page 25- "There was no such thing as canned, frozen, or fast food. everything, except for bread which was purchased daily, was made from scratch." In America most people don't make their whole meals from scratch. Since there is so many things in grocery stores that you can just buy and make at home in less then 20 minutes, people don't usually spend half of there day making one meal like people in other countries do.

Save me, Mickey
page 17- "Because we were new to this country, we were impressed not just by the big attractions but also by the little things- smiling, employees, clean bathrooms, and clear signage." When I read this I though about how many big attractions we have in America, like Disney World, Sea World, Animal Kingdom ex. I had never realized it before, but we have lot's of big magical things we are not all grateful for.
page 19- "One of my father's biggest fears in moving to America was child kidnapping." This a serious problem in America many children are taken away from their homes and families and never seen again, this doesn't really happen in many other countries. Sure there are violence in other countries, but it isn't where people abduct children.

In the Gutter
page 14- "In his attempts to embrace American culture, my father had joined the local bowling league." I thought this quote related to Children of the River, because Ravy and Sundara also try to embrace the American culture by going to sporting events like football and try to understand what everyone finds interesting about it.
page 14- "His dream was that the doorbell would ring and he would answer it. Standing there would be a man in a three-piece navy blue suit who would ask him, "Are you Kazem?" " This made me think of how many people from other countries think everybody in America is rich, when the truth is that most people are not that rich here, and many people come to America expecting to get rich but it never happens for them.
